Watts Creek

Watts Creek is a small tributary of the Choptank River where tradition claims pirate Captain Kidd found refuge. Buried treasure reputedly has been sought along its banks. This local legend is probably based on the exploits of the 17th century Chesapeake Bay pirate, Roger Makeele, who operated out of Watts Island in Tangier Sound.

Today the tributary is silted in and no longer navigable for even small craft. A pungy shipwreck was pulled from the river near the mouth of Watts Creek in the 1960s.
